Production Notes

When the pages that became Another Planet were newly finished in my sketchbook, I referred to the project as The Sci-Fi Short. I intended it to be a short story running 24 pages. Of course, as I started refining the project, I realized that I’d bitten into something much bigger. Despite working with the story to try to distill it into my intended page count, I found that I could not reduce the page count and still tell the story as I had planned to. I’d either be forced add in a bunch of captions to bridge parts or live with the longer page count.

When I’ve finish thumbnailing a story in my sketchbook, I scan the pages, replace my scribbled text with a legible font, and bind it into a booklet to get a feel for how the physical book will lay out.

I tend to reprint the book at major milestones like finished pencils and after inking it.

Before Another Planet was a black and white book I intended to print it in full color. However, after I spent some time finding quotes from printers, I decided that I rather liked the smaller 5.5” x 11” size. At the smaller size, I couldn’t find an affordable way to make color work. I did keep the color cover and much prefeerd the feel of the hand made book with a matte finish color cover to the gloss floppy I’d proofed.

I see so many high-quality on-demand printed books from printers like Kablam that I explored this option but the resulting book did not have the same individual feel that the final version possesses.
